Motorola Mobility End of Life (EOL) Dates and End of Support (EOS) Dates

Wondering how long your Android smartphone will keep working safely? Motorola Mobility end of life is the date a Motorola smartphone stops receiving official fixes, and after it passes, every new security hole stays open. This guide lists the models reaching that point, explains how Google's Android partner Motorola Mobility sets its dates, and shows what you can do about it.

Motorola Mobility End of Life: What It Means for Your Phone

Every Android smartphone has an end-of-life date, the day the manufacturer stops shipping new software. Motorola Mobility, a Lenovo subsidiary, publishes timelines for each model, and the dates are not a secret. Motorola decides them from the device tier and the sales region, so two phones from the same year can expire months apart.

A phone does not stop working when that day arrives. Calls, photos and apps carry on. What changes is that the vendor no longer patches problems found later, and users slowly carry more risks. Android newcomers often confuse the two ideas, so the next sections separate them.

The Android smartphone market moves fast, and Google sets the base software that Motorola Mobility adapts for each Moto G, Razr and Edge model. When Google ends the update cycle for an Android version, Motorola Mobility must decide whether to carry that smartphone forward on its own, and Lenovo's finance team signs off on the budget. Lenovo supplies the manufacturing, so Lenovo and the Motorola Mobility team share the cost of every extra year of Android support. Google's monthly bulletin is where each fix begins, and Google Play rules decide when an old Android version gets left behind.

How Motorola Handles Software Support

Historically, Motorola Mobility gave most phones security updates for two or three years, and many models received just one major Android upgrade. That support policy was far tighter than what Samsung or Google offered. Each launch has its own schedule, and channels or regions can shift the dates, so check the line for your exact model and carrier.

The company also splits its range by price. Entry-level and mid-range models usually sit at the short end, while a flagship such as the Motorola Signature gets the longest window. Lenovo handles manufacturing and the supply chain, but the Chicago team that designs the handsets sets the update promises.

Google's own Android release cycle drives the timing: Google publishes a security bulletin every month, Motorola Mobility tests each fix on every smartphone it sells, and carriers add another approval step. Google Play keeps working on older Android versions for a while, but Google gradually raises the minimum version that apps may target.

Security Updates Versus Android Updates

These are two separate things. An Android update brings a new operating system version and new features, while security updates ship the monthly fixes that close holes. Under its newer rules, Motorola Mobility does not promise new Android releases on top of the security patches, so a phone can stop getting new Android releases long before the protection ends. A phone that still receives patches is safer than one that gets nothing.

The European Union Five-Year Rule

Earlier this year the European Union demanded at least five years of security fixes, and Motorola Mobility improved its terms for newer models. Handsets sold in the region must carry that minimum, though the brand found loopholes that avoid promising Android upgrades.

Motorola Handsets That Lost Security Updates in 2026

As of mid-August 2026, a long list of popular Motorola handsets had either lost support or were about to. They range from the budget Moto G line to the higher-priced Edge series, so check this list before assuming your phone is covered. Most of these devices got between two and four years of coverage from Motorola Mobility, whose Android builds follow Google's release schedule.

Because the Motorola Mobility list is long, plenty of people will meet the cutoff within a few months of each other. The December group is the biggest: that is where several Moto G models and the Moto E15 land together.

Motorola Models Reaching End of Support Before 2027

Looking one step further, a second wave arrives through 2027. Motorola Mobility's own commitments remain more limited than those of Google and Samsung, so anything launched in 2023 or 2024 deserves a look. Several of these are in their last year of software support now, and the table below sorts them by launch date.

The Razr foldables fall in the middle of this group, which surprises buyers who assumed a premium price meant longer coverage. A trade-in or a discount deal may be worth it if your model sits in the table.

Software Updates Compared Across Samsung, Google and Apple

Motorola Mobility is not the only name facing a support cliff, and comparing the major brands shows how different the promises are. Each company counts the years from a different starting point, so read the small print. The shorter Motorola Mobility windows look weak next to the seven-year commitments Google and Samsung now make for their Android smartphone ranges.

Samsung Galaxy Support Windows

The Korean company's policy varies by device tier. Flagship Galaxy models get up to seven years, mid-range models top out at five or six, and budget phones receive up to four. The Galaxy S22 line stopped getting Android updates in February 2026, with security updates ending February 2027, and the Z Fold4 and Z Flip4 follow in August 2027.

Google Pixel Support Windows

Google has improved its support commitment over the years. On its official support page, the Pixel 8 and later devices get seven years of OS and security updates from the date they first became available, while older ones receive five. The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro reach end of life in October 2026, the Pixel 6a in July 2027, and the 7 and 7 Pro in October 2027. The earliest Pixel generations are already finished.

Apple and Its Vintage and Obsolete Labels

Apple does not print final support dates the way Android makers do. Instead it classes a product as vintage once it has been off sale for more than five years, and obsolete after seven. An iPhone usually gets iOS updates for five to seven years, and Apple still ships security-only fixes for older models, as it did in May 2026 for the iPhone 6s through the iPhone XR.

Why an End-of-Life Phone Is a Security Risk

Your phone probably handles banking, health data, work email and every private conversation, so a gap in protection matters. Researchers and criminals alike dig for weaknesses in mobile software all the time. When the vendor finds one, it ships a fix, but once a model is out of support, newly found flaws may never be fixed.

Beyond safety, an unsupported phone is frozen in time. New features stop arriving, apps drop older Android versions, and speed tends to drop as software is tuned for newer hardware. The notification that a software update is available simply stops appearing, and that silence is the first sign.

Security Vulnerabilities After the Last Patch

The danger is not the missing features. Every flaw found after the final patch is permanent, so the number of exposed holes grows each month and never shrinks. An unsupported phone is more likely to be hit by data breaches, because hackers can reuse a known exploit on any device that cannot receive the fix.

What to Do If You Lose Software Support

Start by checking where you stand: open Settings, choose About phone, and read the Android security status date. If it shows a date many months old and the Settings screen never reports an update available, your smartphone has probably reached its cutoff. Compare your model with the Motorola Mobility tables above, and with the Android version list that Google publishes for its Android partners.

Many people keep an out-of-support handset for months or years because upgrading costs money or because it still works fine. If that is you, a few habits reduce the exposure:

• Keep updating your apps for as long as developers allow.
• Avoid unsecured public Wi-Fi networks, or use a trusted connection.
• Install software only from the official app store, and be choosy even there.
• Be careful with links in emails and messages.

The best advice is still to move to a newer model when the budget allows. Battery condition helps you judge timing: a handset launched in 2024 usually still has a healthy cell, and many Motorola owners tell Google and review sites that their phones last three to four years.

Unofficial Android and LineageOS

Tech-savvy owners can extend life by installing an unofficial Android build such as LineageOS, one of several custom ROM projects. Installation is harder for some people, and not every Motorola model that loses official support is covered by a custom ROM developer, so check compatibility before you wipe the device.

Upgrade to a Phone With Longer Support

The good news is that newer Motorola Mobility devices carry much longer promises, with some supported for up to seven years. Compare the end dates before you buy:

The Moto G17 pair shows the catch: a cheap new phone can still end up with the shortest cover, so the model matters more than the model year. Google and Samsung also offer some of the strongest software guarantees in the industry, up to seven years for select Google and Samsung phones.

How Lenovo and Google Shaped Motorola Phones

Understanding why the dates look the way they do helps, and it starts with ownership. The original Motorola, Inc. was founded in 1928 and split on January 4, 2011: Motorola Solutions took the enterprise side, while Motorola Mobility kept the consumer phones. The company now sits under Lenovo, a Chinese company, but it has changed hands twice in under fifteen years.

Independence and the Google Years

After the Razr V3 boom, the company lost ground to Nokia, Apple and Samsung and posted several quarters of losses. In 2012 Google bought Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion, mostly for its patents, which were meant to protect Android vendors from lawsuits. Google then sold the Motorola Mobility set-top box business and focused on cheaper handsets.

The Lenovo Era: Moto G, Razr and Edge Lines

In October 2014 Google sold the business to Lenovo for $2.91 billion, keeping the advanced research group and most patents. Lenovo's own phone division was folded into Motorola Mobility, and Lenovo still builds the devices while Motorola Mobility designs them in Chicago. Today the range includes the high-end Edge series, the Razr foldables and the budget Moto G models, all running Android with an interface called Hello UI. As of 2026 the Motorola Signature is the flagship, and the company continues to sell Motorola phones across Android price tiers worldwide.
